A Carolina State of Mind

Carolina is a critical resource for North Carolina and deeply committed to  serving the public.

Holding true to this commitment, the UNC School of Government is more than a school — it is the most trusted, nonpartisan asset available to the state and vital to its future.

The UNC School of Government is the largest university-based local government training, advisory and research organization in the country, serving all 100 counties in North Carolina. Through projects such as the Development Finance Initiative, the Center for Public Leadership and Governance, and the Master of Public Administration program, we connect local and state government officials with each other, with economic development partners and with the expertise needed for effective government.

Our Legislative Reporting Service has informed state and local officials about the status and content of North Carolina legislation for more than 80 years.

The school also educates and trains judicial officials, including judges, magistrates and clerks of court. W. R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor Jessica Smith, who writes NC Crimes, the definitive guide to criminal law in North Carolina, helped the North Carolina Commission on the Administration of Law and Justice undertake a comprehensive evaluation of the state judicial system.

The knowledge, tools and expertise the UNC School of Government provides to the state leads to more effective governing, more viable communities and more prosperous economies. In other words, equipping decision makers and improving lives near and far.
