“My ‘aha’ moment was when I discovered that a career in dentistry was a great combination of art and science—dentists prevent and treat disease as well as create esthetically pleasing smiles—and an opportunity to work with people and improve health.”

Growing up, Jane Weintraub, who stepped down as dean of the UNC School of Dentistry in June 2016, wanted to be an artist. But her first glimpse into a microscope convinced her seventh-grade self that a career as a scientist was for her.

In her career as a scientist, she has helped shape scientific guidelines regarding the sealants and fluoride that have become a part of mainstream dental and public health practices. And she continues, and encourages others, to think big about how to advance knowledge and help society.

Weintraub is an Alumni Distinguished Professor who holds a joint appointment in the School of Dentistry’s Department of Dental Ecology and the Gillings School of Global Public Health.
