2016 Gates Cambridge Scholars

“Larry and Matt are those rare students who quietly and without fanfare change the landscape of their professions. They have already accomplished so much in their young careers in academia… They are also humanitarians whose strengths lie in their ability to connect on a human level.” -Chancellor Carol L. Folt

Larry Han ’16 came to Carolina on a Morehead-Cain Scholarship. Matthew Leming ’15, ’16 (M.S.) graduated debt-free from UNC because of the Carolina Covenant. Now, both will pursue graduate educations as Gates Cambridge Scholars at the University of Cambridge in England.

They bring Carolina’s Gates Cambridge Scholars total to five and are the first duo from UNC to earn the honor in the same year; 35 scholars were chosen from 826 U.S. applicants.
