Arts and Athletics: A Creative Conversation

“This is like a dream. Indi’s a freestyler. We’re a group of improvisational dancers. I hope the crowds took away the fact that these things can have a conversation. These disciplines don’t have to be separate.”

It’s not every day that Michelle Dorrance — choreographer, tap dancer and MacArthur Fellow — and her dance troupe team up with soccer freestylists in a library for a performance. But that’s exactly what they did on the Carolina campus. With soccer freestylist Indi Cowie, a former Tar Heel women’s soccer player, Dorrance brought a different take on the arts to Carolina, underscoring the importance of live arts experiences and art learning — one of the initiatives of Arts Everywhere.
