Broadcasting To Teens With Asthma

“Teens don’t want to be different from their peers, and it’s not uncommon for them to be in denial about their asthma. They can stop taking their long-term control meds and rely only on quick-relief meds, which don’t keep asthma under control.”

Dr. Betsy Sleath, a professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, wants to change that mindset of some teens with asthma. To do that, Sleath and her team created a six-part video series — “You vs. Asthma” — which is presented as an all-teen newscast and emphasizes the importance of talking with a doctor during a visit.

Sleath received a $1.9 million grant from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute for her work to help improve the lives of teens with asthma.

The Eshelman Institute for Innovation is made possible by a $100 million gift from Fred Eshelman to accelerate the creation and development of ideas leading to discoveries and transformative changes in education, research and health care.
