Hussman School wins 2020 Hearst Awards

The nation’s most prestigious student journalism award has once again distinguished the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media as a national leader.

The Hearst Journalism Awards announced that UNC Hussman has won its 2020 national championship, and five UNC Hussman students and recent graduates earned the right to compete as finalists in the Hearst individual national championship competition in the fields of multimedia, radio and television.

The school placed in the top three of all four awards categories. Of the 30 students UNC Hussman sent to the competition, 23 placed in the top 10 of their fields. The 2020 Hearst championship gives UNC-Chapel Hill five championships in the last six years and nine championships since 2002 — more than any other school. Hussman has finished in the top 5 every year since 2002.

“Careers are made with Hearst Awards. This strong group of 2020 Hearst winners have earned the national spotlight. They follow in a long tradition of Hussman grads who have built strong careers with the confidence learned in this competition,” said Susan King, dean of the school.
