Maintaining Normalcy

An undeniable expert in his field, CJ Skender, clinical professor at UNC Kenan-Flagler, stands out as a teacher because of his unique teaching style and unwavering support of his students.

Having been a professor at Kenan-Flagler for 23 years, Skender’s teaching habits have become well-known throughout the Carolina community, and specifically in the halls of Koury and McColl. For example, Skender is known to begin every class with what he calls “fourplay” — four songs that he finds relevant that day.

“I developed these habits over time,” said Skender. “Some students take to them but others would rather me just teach.”

Skender feels it is especially important to maintain habits like these during this time of crisis, even in online classroom settings.

“I think it is imperative to maintain a sense of normalcy in the classroom during this time,” said Skender. “I am not sure that my students would be comfortable if things were different.”
