Making and Doing Good

Rickie David Willis ’75 built a 50-year career in radio and television at stations throughout the country, spending the last half of his career as a news executive in his native state of North Carolina.

Upon his retirement, Willis and his wife established the Rickie David & Joy P. Willis Scholarship Fund to give back to the Carolina community that has been so transformative in their lives. The fund will help students attend the UNC School of Media and Journalism, particularly qualified community college students who could use financial assistance as they transfer to Carolina. It’s the type of support that Willis himself benefited from as a student in the early ’70s.

“I graduated from UNC in 1975 with a degree in radio, television and motion pictures,” Willis wrote to the future recipients of the scholarship. “I went on to a career in local television and radio that took me to many parts of this country and the world. It was a rewarding life. I hope this gift allows you the opportunity to do the same.”
