On the Road to Recovery

With a new mobile care program called Health on Wheels, Carolina Nursing is partnering with local churches to bring convenient, affordable health care to chronically ill patients — literally. Using a specially outfitted health-care van known as “Healy,” our teams of faculty and students pull up each week in neighborhood locations designed to maximize access to the underserved. Many of the patients cared for are under- or uninsured and would otherwise rely on local emergency rooms for primary care.

Health on Wheels is already demonstrating a positive impact on the lives of chronically ill patients in the areas it serves. They report better understanding and greater confidence in managing their symptoms, and the burden on emergency rooms in these areas has been eased.

As a public institution designed to serve our state, we are deeply committed to promoting the health and well-being of North Carolina’s most vulnerable communities.
