The 3 E’s: Environment, Economics and Engineering

Dr. Characklis teaching students

Greg Characklis, Philip C. Singer Distinguished Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at UNC-Chapel Hill, is conducting research that will significantly affect both local and national communities.

As the director of the Center on Financial Risk in Environmental Systems, which spans both the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and the UNC Institute for the Environment, Characklis is especially interested in integrating engineering and economic principles into the development of solutions to environmental challenges. Specifically, he is researching the development of improved strategies for managing water supply and treatment systems, exploration of the economic and environmental trade-offs associated with energy production, and the management of environmental financial risks.

Characklis is one of the many faculty members at Carolina working toward building a more sustainable future for our communities.
