“By covering stories that are untold, we are giving people a legacy that was robbed from them,” said Shaista Sayeed ’24 about the work she and her classmates are doing in first-year seminar class, “By Persons Unknown: Race and Reckoning in North Carolina.”

This class is one of the many courses offered through the UNC Institute of African American Research’s new initiative, Student Learning to Advance Truth and Equity (IAAR-SLATE), which was launched in fall 2020. Funded by Chancellor Guskiewicz, this initiative serves to further the University’s strategic plan, Carolina Next: Innovations for the Public Good, in particular Initiative 1, Build Our Community Together.

This initiative encompasses more than two dozen courses that span across various schools within the University, and the course proposals are continuing to grow. Such courses include “Southern Legacies: The Descendants Project,” “Social Geography: Radical Black Thought” and more.
