Unprecedented ‘Times’

Giulia Heyward

Of a pool of more than 3,000 applicants worldwide, Carolina student and UNC Hussman Roy H. Park Fellow Giulia Heyward ’21 (M.A.) was selected to be one of 33 New York Times Fellows for the coming academic year.

Throughout the yearlong fellowship, Heyward will work as a reporter for The Times, where she has already worked as a freelancer during the summer of 2020. Many of her freelance pitches began as assignments within UNC Hussman classes, and Heyward credits several faculty of the school for mentoring her toward her goals.

“Having the opportunity to work alongside reporters I’ve been reading for years is amazing,” said Heyward. “It’s such an honor to work for an outlet that has such a large readership and influence. “The professors at UNC Hussman have all really pushed me with their work. They helped mold me into a great journalist.”
