Almost Like A Sorority

“I felt like it was almost like a sorority.”

Before becoming the elite runner who won the 2017 New York Marathon— the first American woman to win the race in 40 years — Shalane Flanagan was a member of the Carolina track and cross country teams. At Carolina, she won the NCAA cross country national champion two years in a row, while picking up numerous other accolades. In one interview, she credits her fellow Tar Heel teammates and their enthusiasm for training and running — saying it was like a sorority — that set up her competitive career.
