Speaking for Students

Chancellor’s Science Scholar (CSS) and two-term president of the Residence Hall Association (RHA) Kira Griffith ’21 truly embodies what it means to be a leader in the Chapel Hill community.

Having gotten involved with RHA as a first-year, Griffith created and assumed the position of executive social justice advocate as a sophomore. Later that year, she decided to run for president with the goal of bringing RHA into the advocacy space.

“I wanted to help it reach its full potential as not just a social organization, but an important governing body that actually advocates for residents and stands up for them in spaces where it’s needed,” Griffith said. “We have a duty to make sure that the student voice is represented to Carolina Housing and to University administration overall.”

Griffith has set an extraordinary example for not only the CSS and RHA communities, but for the Carolina community as a whole.

“Even as a scientist whose job it is to advance knowledge, she still finds some kind of way to be one of the greatest leaders I’ve ever seen,” said Richard Watkins, Griffith’s mentor and adviser through CSS. She’s “the Michael Jordan of science and leadership.”
